Media Center
Instructor: Mr. Beach
Concord's Library Media Center provides instructional materials for classroom use and recreational reading. The library promotes reading activities and encourages students to read at least 15 minutes each day. The library is open before school and after school. While we limit the number of books students check out, we encourage parents to come and check out books too. We let you have more than 2 at a time.

For the 2009-2010 school year we have a modified fixed/flex schedule for all grades. Every class in 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th has one assigned time to visit each three weeks. For special projects teachers and the librarian will plan lessons together to complement and enhance what takes place in the classroom. The lesson topics will vary from visit to visit. The class times will vary as well. Kindergarten shares their related arts times with Spanish, so those classes visit the library three or four times over the 3-week rotation. Grade 3 visits the library two times in our three week cycle. You can click on the LIBRARY SCHEDULE link listed under GROUP WEB PAGES to check what day your child's class will visit the library.

The students in grades 2 to 5 will visit the library with their library passes any time the teacher deems appropriate to exchange books. Teachers have been encouraged to create a chart to allow several students to come each day so that every child has the opportunity to change books every week if necessary. In fact the avid readers can come every day. Ask you child about his or her library checkout time.

2009 Storytelling Festival Ends
Anderson County Library's Starburst Storytelling Festival ended on Thursday evening. Wright Clarkson from Charlotte was the featured teller the final night. Tim Lowry told stories Monday evening and was the featured artist-in-residence at Anderson University during the festival. He has visited Concord a number of times, as early as 1991, when he was still in college. He was here this past February working with Mrs. Solesbee and the Fifth Grade classes. On Monday, October 19, Concord's fifth grade students heard him perform.

If you missed this year's Festival, make plans to attend next year. It really is an event you shouldn't miss.

International Children's Digital Library
At the South Carolina Association of School Librarians' conference held in Greenville March 11 to 13, I attended a session that introduced me to the International Children's Digital Library.

This is a wonderful resource for all of us. The site has hundreds of picture books on line ready to read. These books are available in many different languages too.

Visit www.icdlbooks.org to see the books and languages available.
2009 READ TO SUCCEED
The Read to Succeed program for this year began January 15, 2009. For the past six weeks students and families have been reading and recording the time they spent reading. Now the forms are due! On February 25, 2009, students are no longer required to record the time they spent reading.

This year we distributed the forms only to those that requested one. We have over 150 requests, so I hope we get all 150 back in time to be included. The ticket request must be postmarked by March 3.

This program rewards students with an admission ticket to a Six Flags park. If they read for 6 hours now, they get a ticket to Six Flags for the summer. :)

Have fun reading. E-mail me at
danielbeach@anderson5.net.

Reading-and-Responding
I have created a wiki so readers can contribute their thoughts on books. First off we are discussing the 2008-09 Children's Book Awards. I hope you will join in as you read some of the books this summer.

If you have another book that you would like to talk about, please do so. I always like to hear what others have to say about books.

To add to the wiki, visit http://reading-and-responding.wikispaces.com. Please join us in the discussion.
Online Resources for Kids

The South Carolina State Library provides a number of resources for our public and school libraries. The DISCUS resources offer encyclopedia materials for research purposes. The State Library created School Rooms to help students, teachers, and parents across our state. Visit http://scsl.schoolrooms.net to see how it can help your children with their homework.

Knowitall.org is ETV's educational Web portal, a collection of fun, interactive websites for K-12 students, teachers and parents. Visit http://www.knowitall.org to join the fun.

Enjoy these resources provide by our state legislature and please inform your legislator how valuable these resources are to your family.

Blog site
I invite you to visit our Concord Library blog site at http://danielbeach.blogs.anderson5.net. Click on the link at the bottom of the page.
I don't know how often I will post items there, but I encourage you to visit and make your own comments about the books I mention on the site. Feel free to suggest books that you and your family have enjoyed. Hope you will find something there that will interest you and your family. Eventually I would love to include some podcasts of students sharing books that they are excited about.
Happy reading!

SC Book Award

And the winner is . . .

Picture Book Award winner is SWEET TOOTH by Marjie Palatini. It got a few votes here at Concord but not many.

The Children's Book Award winner for this year is THE OLD WILLIS PLACE. Our Concord students chose that as their favorite along with many other South Carolina students.

You may visit the South Carolina School Librarians website at http://www.scasl.net/bookawards/bahistory.htm.  Click on the appropriate level to see the list.

Visit http://www.scasl.net/bookawards/cbahistory.htm to see a complete list of the South Carolina Children's Book Award winners, first awarded in 1976. We have most of these books in our school library.

Visit http://www.scasl.net/bookawards/pictbookhistory.htm to see the list of South Carolina Picture Book Award winners. Since 2006 was the first year the award was given, the list is very short.
