2010 READ TO SUCCEED
January 13, 2010 has arrived so students are reading and recording their time. If I have gotten a message from you, I should have sent the reading logs electronically. If you haven't gotten the reading log, go to the Group File list at the right below and open the 2010 RTS Student Log. Please e-mail me to let me know you printed a copy of the log if you haven't previously enrolled your child.

Parents, enjoy reading to your children for the course of this promotion, even your upper grade students. Upper grade students may read to lower grade students. Just remember that only 10 minutes a day for six days each week will get you to the goal of six hours of reading. So enjoy and come back to the blog on the library page and tell about some things you have been reading.

Everybody can read and record the time they spend reading even if they do not want to win an admission ticket to a Six Flags park. Each student who reads for at least 360 minutes (six hours) in January and February will get a ticket to Six Flags for the summer. :)

Stop recording the time on the Six Flags Reading Log on February 24. Turn in the completed log by February 26, 2010. You may also wish to visit this site too. http://sixflags.weeklyreader.com/wild_about_reading/

Have fun reading. E-mail me at danielbeach@anderson5.net.
Media Center
Instructor: Mr. Beach
Concord's Library Media Center provides instructional materials for classroom use and recreational reading. The library promotes reading activities and encourages students to read at least 15 minutes each day. The library is open before school and after school. While we limit the number of books students check out, we encourage parents to come and check out books too. We let you have more than 2 at a time.

For the 2009-2010 school year we have a modified fixed/flex schedule for all grades. Every class in 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th has one assigned time to visit each three weeks. For special projects teachers and the librarian will plan lessons together to complement and enhance what takes place in the classroom. The lesson topics will vary from visit to visit. The class times will vary as well. Kindergarten shares their related arts times with Spanish, so those classes visit the library three or four times over the 3-week rotation. Grade 3 visits the library two times in our three week cycle. You can click on the LIBRARY SCHEDULE link listed under GROUP WEB PAGES to check what day your child's class will visit the library.

The students in grades 2 to 5 will visit the library with their library passes any time the teacher deems appropriate to exchange books. Teachers have been encouraged to create a chart to allow several students to come each day so that every child has the opportunity to change books every week if necessary. In fact the avid readers can come every day. Ask you child about his or her library checkout time.

International Children's Digital Library
At the South Carolina Association of School Librarians' conference held in Greenville March 11 to 13, I attended a session that introduced me to the International Children's Digital Library.

This is a wonderful resource for all of us. The site has hundreds of picture books on line ready to read. These books are available in many different languages too.

Visit www.icdlbooks.org to see the books and languages available.

Reading-and-Responding
I have created a wiki so readers can contribute their thoughts on books. First off we are discussing the 2008-09 Children's Book Awards. I hope you will join in as you read some of the books this summer.

If you have another book that you would like to talk about, please do so. I always like to hear what others have to say about books.

To add to the wiki, visit http://reading-and-responding.wikispaces.com. Please join us in the discussion.
Blog site
I invite you to visit our Concord Library blog site at http://danielbeach.blogs.anderson5.net. Click on the link at the bottom of the page.
I don't know how often I will post items there, but I encourage you to visit and make your own comments about the books I mention on the site. Feel free to suggest books that you and your family have enjoyed. Hope you will find something there that will interest you and your family. Eventually I would love to include some podcasts of students sharing books that they are excited about.
Happy reading!
